Don’t miss out on Misato

When we say big portions, we mean big portions!

When we say big portions, we mean big portions!

Is it a naïve (and penniless) student fantasy to stuff yourself silly for less than seven quid? Why not skip the greasy burger and chips, and tuck into huge portions of wholesome Japanese food instead?

Impossible dreams come true at Misato, a student friendly cafeteria-style Japanese eatery in Leicester Square that delivers more than your money’s worth.

Four City students chanced upon Misato after agonizing over the colossal prices at places like New Moon. The area just off Leicester Square is dotted with dozens of eateries, but non-descript Misato is distinguished by a long queue of people waiting patiently in the nasty drizzle.

Half an hour later, we crammed into a tiny table just big enough to accommodate the massive portions. The place was abuzz, and the young, but brusque staff looked harried with the constant stream of hungry customers.

The orders arrived after a quick 10 minute wait. Our eyes widened collectively: ‘generous’ is an understatement when describing the portion size.

My vote goes to the Chicken Katu Curry Rice, served with aromatic rice, veggies and immense pieces of chicken topped with delicious gravy (£6.20). Its pork counterpart was just as satisfying and delicious. The ladies in the group all had leftovers, while the one fellow barely managed to polish his plate.

The Bento box options (single-portion takeout) are a steal; the most popular and expensive being the Sake Shio Bent, i.e. grilled, salted salmon (£8.60).

Aromatic Japanese tea was a perfect accompaniment to this hearty meal (£2 for the large pot).

As we came out of the restaurant over-fed and happy, we pledged to return as soon as possible. I returned the very next day.

p.s. Misato is cash only, so have the dough ready before you plunge into the crowd!
