Take a study break and help the kids

Deaf Thai kids will benefit if you buy a cupcake or get a massage outside the LSE library

Sick of studying? Footnotes driving you insane? Then take a break from the stale library air and enjoy a brisk Thai massage as you chomp on a cupcake.

On Thursday 3 June a charity fundraising event will take place outside the LSE’s library between 10 and 4 in the afternoon. The Thai themed fundraiser will offer a variety of treats including cakes, Thai food, fresh smoothies, massages and beverages.

The aim of the event is to raise a minimum of £500 to fund the development of a teaching center for underprivileged children in the Thai province of Chang Mai.

The organizer, LSE student Alix Huchet, said; “I’m very happy with the support we’ve received so far, loads of people are going to help and we’ve got professional massagers on board and supporting the cause.”

The Children’s Shelter in Chiang Mai was founded in 2007 and provides accommodation and education for deaf and underprivileged children from rural Thailand. The money raised will help them expand their education facilities and help more children fulfil their potential.

A spokesperson for the organisation said; “Some of the kids here are deaf and no one in their villages understood them, here they are learning to communicate and are able to have a social life and feel accepted.”

“Without the Children’s Shelter they would still be alone and misunderstood, they would have had nowhere else to go and little chance of a good future.”

The Shelter currently provides more than 50 children with a permanent residence although it hopes to expand and house more in the future.

The aim of the foundation is to eventually become self sufficient through tourism and farming projects.

“This is a great opportunity to take a guilt free break from studying,” says Huchet, “We need people to come out, enjoy the food and help those not fortunate enough to have the facilities we have here in the UK.”

The fundraiser will take place on Thursday 3 June from 10-4pm in front of the LSE’s library.
