Preview: A Certain Library in Bath

There’s a chest full of rotting bones in a certain library, laden with the muskiness of books and a dead body. Influenced by Alfred Hitchcock’s murder mystery themes, “A Certain Library in Bath”, serves as the perfect crime scene in which to hold a dinner party. Sounds a little mysterious and weird? Perhaps.
Nick is a womaniser and an avid gambler. Claudia and Beth, a cocktail of opposites attracting one another, take their love relationship to another level. They turn into partners in crime, trying to commit the perfect murder. Inspired by their ultra feminist heroine from back in the days at school, the revered Roberta Fox, the couple indulge in complete debauchery with Nick. He’s a specimen who is just a nuisance to female authority. Holding their mantis in complete captivity and preying on his male weaknesses, the two rid of him and invite his close friends and Roberta Fox to celebrate his demise at a dinner party over his dead body, hidden in a trunk.
There’s almost a sense of sexual cannibalism. The socialites mingle away, as Beth plays the confident hostess, showing off her collection of literature to one of her guests Bentley, the book buff. Ken’s comedic character comes into play, and an unenthused Mrs Caversham fails to carry her drink. Meanwhile, Claudia loses her cool and becomes paranoid as the guests become more and more suspicious.
There’s an overhanging suspense. Will the couple manage to escape to Bath with the body or will they land behind bars, as Roberta Fox’s sly observations of certain events become sharper and sharper? Will the two be appraised or abhorred by Miss Fox for their sinful act and above all will the couple’s relationship fall apart? It’s a production full of questions and conundrums which go through various stages of metamorphosis.
Written and directed by Nick Pelas, A Certain Bath in Library will be playing on 4th July, 2010 at Theatro Technis, 26 Crowndale Road, London NW1 1TT.
