International Musicians in London
Ever since the rise of the Beatles during the Swinging Sixties, London has been seen as the music capital of the world. The city attracts musicians from all corners of the globe looking to kick start their career. But very few actually make it. Claire Sergent and Elisabeth Fischer offer two sides of the struggle of international musicians in London.
“Don’t expect convention – expect results”

Many dream of living the life of a famous musician but few realise this fantasy. A special place exists in London that is geared toward pushing the musically inclined onto the path of success. Tech Music Schools London is a drop-in centre for young artists who want to make a living playing music. The school has been claiming to turn this vision into reality since they burst onto the scene in 1983 under the slogan: ‘Don’t expect convention – expect results’.

“London is Europe’s capital of music,” said Italian bass guitar player Dominik Told. He and drummer Thomas Ebner, both 21, have not looked back since they took a chance and decided to study for a Higher Diploma certificate in London.
“I’ve never regretted this decision,” said Ebner. The school provides them with experienced teachers who still play in bands of their own.
“They know the music industry, they come from the field,” said Ebner. After all, being taught by someone who toured with Jamiroquai or Radiohead can only improve one’s chances of success.
The two quickly learned a musician’s job is not simply to play music. Self-promotion via the Internet and getting in touch with producers and record labels requires both organisational talent and hard work. The school supplies its pupils with contacts and advice, but to give their career that all important takeoff, students have to work independently.
With hundreds of international music students, competition is unavoidable. “But it is a friendly competition,” said Ebner. “It makes you work harder.”
Projects, jam sessions and gigs with other students are part of the daily life of the two Italians.
“Tech Music Schools is a great place to start your music career,” said Ebner. “I’ve learned a lot and I still see my own improvement from week to week.” Hopefully it will not be too long before we see some of the graduates performing at the world’s premier venues.
